what I’ve learned (these past couple of months/weeks)
….. I’m still a fan of Judd Apatow’s movies but I can NOT get into Jeremy Piven, the only way that I could sit through one of his movies is if John or Joan Cusack is in it. (for me the inclusion of both or either of the Wonder Cusacks brings a sense of normalcy to Pivens over the top acting)
….. the more I mow my lawn, the more it grows, it DOESN’T stop! I do tend to have my Hank Hill moments where I can stand there and appreciate my lawn but living in a sub-tropical climate does have its drawbacks.
….. in time I might actually watch a movie that has Channing Tatum in it
….. I’ve been to busy with unpacking and the move that I haven’t been able to get into a book recently… more of a statement rather than something I learned
What the nerds hath wrought….
In regards to the mayhem that is going on at the 09′ San Diego Comic Con, I’m … kind of stuck in the middle.
It seems to me that the original purpose of Comic Con was for comic book fans, nerds, geeks and dweebs alike to come together. Eventually it morphed from a small’ish’ convention with book publishers, sci-fi show stars and the occasional big name into a mongrel whore fest fit to be covered in People magazine. I’d normally complain over things like Twilight being there when, to me, it doesn’t seem like it’s a part of geek culture, but just because it’s not a part of MY geek culture doesn’t mean that it doesn’t resonate with a person younger than myself. (side note, I really shouldn’t knock those books at all, it appeals to a wide audience and it’s not written in abbreviated txt speak so it can’t be all that bad)
What did stand out to me was a pic I saw on Yahoo of Rumer Willis, one of the girls from “The Hills” (or one of its equivalents) and they were promoting a movie about sororitygirls, (I didn’t stick around long enough to even get a gyst of what the movie was about) , it boggles my mind is to why that’s even being marketed there. The “SDCC” ,as I’ve seen it being dubbed, has really turned into another example of Hollywood self aggrandizing itself to death.
Revenge of the Fallen
I have returned from an early morning viewing of, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and as you’d suspect I liked it very much. Now I feel I might have to preface this with the fact that my fanaticism falls directly between the sort of fan who’d tattoo Transformers insignia’s on his arms and the sort of fan who’d name their children Optimus, Arcee and Starscream. A few parts of the movie I really liked: Bumblebee, ”transformed” from comic relief in part 1 to a semi-ass kicking son of a mother in part 2. Soundwave and “Rampage”: I left that name in quotes because to me the Decepticon spy/Jaguar will always be RAVAGE, (only a few letters difference I know, but still) just the MERE inclusion of this team made me smile. The Matrix: NO! not Keanu, fans of the 1986 movie will remember the premise behind the Autobot Matrix of leadership and how it will ”Light our darkest hour..” yada yada, well this time around it’s included, I will not explain beyond that. The inclusion of Arcee and the constructicons was another bright spot.
Some not so great parts, Skids and Mudflap (voiced by Spongebob himself, Tom Kenny), ::sigh:: somewhere an executive remembered Darius McCrary’s performance as Jazz and asked themselves “How can we duplicate this but make it more racist and more insulting to the viewer? ANSWER: twin autobots complete with gold teeth, the capacity to pop caps in asses, etc; I was waiting for one of them to declare their victory as DY-NO-MITE. and last but not least, the inclusion of Devastators nards….. you will have to see it to believe it.
Mash Potatoes with no gravy
I caught a quick blurb about Billy Bob Thornton canceling his Canadian tour, it has mostly to do with a clip that has gained alot of airplay recently on the web. Billy Bob was doing an interview with a Canadian radio show host and apparently became snippy when the shows host mentioned his acting career, or more to the point I believe he said that Billy Bob’s first love was acting. While I do agree that Mr Thornton did display alot of douchery with how he reacted to the interviewers question he is entitled to make his own observations. (I suggest searching for said clip on youtube, I’m too lazy to link it). Further along in the interview Billy Bob compared Canadian audiences to mash potatoes minus the gravy, again he IS entitled to his opinion but it appears he’s being judged by a mistake he had made out of anger.
I’ve been to Canada and really liked it there and I’d venture a guess that most Canadians are probably not as rowdy as American audiences when it comes to certain venues or music types, but i hardly think that they should boo at BB Thornton.
Update 3/27
well I loves me some learning and this is what has been learned
… the customer is always wrong and yeah I’m not kidding, they are . When you are given a specific set of rules and are told to govern your work area in said fashion then there’s only so much leeway that you can give to people before your job becomes pointless.
now that I got THAT out of the way..
I also learned that trivia can be profitable
given enough elbow grease, I TOO can eradicate mold and mildew!
peoples personal opinions shouldn’t bother me so much
building up a tolerance can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what it is that you’re tolerating
people might take their time responding after you kindly asked them to do so, those some people might be eating potato chips will standing in a driveway, chairless, tableless and meatless… oh well
I don’t feel like picking up my book right now so I’ll blog instead
pretty much the title says it all… there are some things I’ve been pondering
…if I start my “25 random facts” post on facebook NOW will I just be copying everyone else? or will my pent up rage from past attrocities shake certain folks to the core
can octogenarians sense sarcasm? and if they can will they still obey? (i.e “have a good day” and “you’re welcome”)
will pointless talent shows get renewed for another season? (no picture needed too many tv shows to list)
the a.d.d. in me has taken a tighter hold in my life, either that or it’s just plain exhaustion moving into my life… for example, I’ve woken up from my sunday naps (bids to stay alive) to watch tv (The Amazing Race) and for the life of me there are whole chunks, segments, people that I can’t remember. It could be that I’m half asleep, it could be that I’m growing out of my tv is life phase (I kinda hope not) but 60 plus hours punching the clock CAN do that to ya.
not to mention this weekend daylight savings timestarts [or ends, I really don't know] and that will only throw me off just THAT much more completely fucking me all up..
On a lighter note, I did catch Jimmy Fallon’s second night ( I work so I slept on wed. and thur. nite)… I think he’ll do just fine, I guess I just have to get used to his bits… I guess
a newer rant
for the past couple of months or so, everytime that I’ve been enjoying a program on TV, it seems that some news anchor, some crawl below the screen or numerous spots have been devoted to telling the american people about DTV2009. Not much to complain about I guess, but consider that if most people watch tv more than 2 hours a week, chances are that they ALREADY KNOW.
ketchup
it’s been a hell of a half month since i last wrote.
What I’ve learned these past 2 months.
I REALLY hate retail, REALLY, REALLY do. people go into the particular store I work in (p/t) and throw stuff on the floor, they also leave their children unattended at the toy wall so their children can yell, scream and make a general mess of things
Ohio isn’t as Mayonaisey as I thought. Although I find it mostly suburbany/rural it isn’t as bad as I thought it would be
Alexis is an ok travel partner. I thought she’d decapitate me the first day much like that poor unfortunate man on the Canadian bus
i also learned that my brain isn’t as A.D.D addled as I thought it was, l’ve really enjoyed a new found love of books. I used to crack a book and lose myself in a jumble of letters and just mentally fall asleep
The McGinley Rule
It’s a long held belief in many pop culture circles that if any tv show adds Ted McGinley to their line up they are doomed from the start or rather it’s a sign that they’ve run out of ideas.
McGinley’s been on Happy Days (the tale end when Fonzie was showing his age), Married with Children (he wasn’t the highlight of that show, not by a longshot), Hope & Faith (Hope AND Faith!!?)
The only worth while things that McGinley has done, starring as Stan Gable in 1984’s Revenge of the Nerds and doing a bit part in Wayne’s World 2 as Mr Scream.
McGinley was recently announced as a candidate on the B-List life raft that is “Dancing with the Stars”, stars look to DWTS to get a bit of career Botox, and whats left at the end of that rainbow? Well you can end up MC’ing a cable dance show (Lopez, Ziering, Spice, Fatone) doing red carpet coverage for the tv guide channel (Fatone, Rhinna)..
((it’s a sarcastic rant people, leave the hate mail elsewhere)))
my latest grievance
in my humble opinion, generation Y has been mislabeled, they should have been called the direct to dvd generation.
now let me backtrack, I consider myself quite fortunate to have been born at the tail end of the gen X era. I remember when there were 3 networks, I remember saturday morning cartoons, I remember various little mid 80s staples of life such as afterschool specials and Nancy Reagan asking me to Just Say No.
Somewhere along the way, I’d say it must have been the early to mid 1990s a Disney executive decided to desecrate their collection of classics and ring out sequels left and right. Useless and pointless re-tellings of stories that ended years and sometimes decades ago. (Snow White 2, Sleeping Beauty 2 and the Ambien Dream)
This eventually spread out to all forms of movies, now not that it was such a classic but my case in point is proved with the release of Scorpion King 2……. Scorpion King 2?!?!? WTF! Was it THAT necessary? Did The Rock leave some questions unanswered in the first one? I mean with Chuck Norris in the 80’s we were taught a lesson, to hate commies, druggies and the vietnamese army, also, Chucks COUNTLESS sequels went to the theaters first.
The straight to DVD market isn’t even being used wisely, case in point Star Wars Episode 2.5, it looks like it sucks, mostly reputable reviewers have dismissed it. So it’s wasting theater space rather than entertaining an 8 year old with ADD and a sword fetish.
